Statement by Kevin McCarthy

My family and I have lived in Cohasset for the last 22 years. We raised our two children in Cohasset, they were educated in the Cohasset School system and they both went on to great colleges. My family has greatly benefited from the very high quality of the Cohasset’s schools and I, as a Selectman, would do everything I could to maintain the very high quality and standards of our schools.

I joined the Governance Committee last year in order to become more involved in the community and to help shepherd the passage of the amended Town Manager Act through the legislative process – which just recently was signed into law by the Governor. We have recently developed detailed proposed changes to our town Bylaws in order to bring them into conformance with the amended Town Manger Act. We are now in the process of reviewing these changes with the BoS, various town committees and at open public meetings. I currently proudly Chair the Governance Committee. This experience has given me an excellent hands-on view and active participation in the nuts and bolts of Cohasset’s town government.

After much careful thought, and consultation with my wife, I have decided to humbly offer my candidacy for Selectman this year. I, like many of you, have watched with dismay at the turbulence and dysfunction of the Board of Selectman (BoS) over the last several years. The inability of the BoS to professionally, and too often even courteously,  work on the critical issues facing Cohasset has impaired the effectiveness of our town governance and done little to alleviate the acrimony which has, for far too long, hung over Cohasset politics. We need a BoS that will openly and respectfully discuss different views on important issues, work out acceptable compromises and above all make final decisions that focus on the best interests of the Town of Cohasset as a whole community. And that means all the way from our children to our elders and everyone in between.

I believe I can offer an extensive successful professional back ground and skills to the position of Selectman. I served 19 years with Dunkin’ Donuts and actively participated in its growth from a regional franchise chain into a national industry leader. I left Dunkin’ Donuts in 1995 as a Vice President and went on to serve as President of a division of the Chock Full ‘O Nuts Corp (“Quikava”). I then chose to leave the corporate world and went to BU Law School as a full-time student – graduating in 1998. I am an attorney focusing mainly on the franchise industry but I have argued a case before the Massachusetts Supreme Court and wrote the brief, argued and won a law making case before the U.S First Circuit Court.  During, and just after, law school I served as the President and Vice-Chair of the National Association of Public Interest lawyers.

I served as the Chair of the Dunkin’ Donuts Independent Franchise Association as well as Chair of the New England Franchise Association. I have an MBA from Suffolk University which I earned while working full time as an executive at Dunkin’ Donuts. I am a Veteran and proud member of American Legion Post #118 here in Cohasset where I administer their growing and very successful Facebook page. Throughout my professional career I have always risen to leadership positions and I know very well how to work and lead various, and sometimes conflicting, interest groups toward positive common goals and for the common good.

If I am fortunate enough to be chosen as one of your Selectman I pledge to bring all my passion, skills and background to the service of our community with the ever present goal of providing Cohasset the great governance it needs and deserves. We should have a town government which not only works very well for all its citizens but one that is respected as a leader and example for other communities – just like our highly regarded school system. Together, we need to return common sense and civil decency back to Cohasset politics. I respectfully and humbly ask for your support and vote in the upcoming May 10, 2014 election for town Selectman.
