Selectman Martha Gjesteby said she has never had a dog, but dogs do visit her at her home from time to time.

In the winter, Christmas through February,  dogs and their humans can partake of Widow’s Walk golf course on the Driftway in Scituate.

Lucky for dogs and their humans, Selectman Steve Gaumer visited Charleston, SC recently and ran into one of the 12 off-leash dog parks in that fine city.

James Island County Park is said to be the best dog park in Charleston. With a dog beach and 4 acres of open grass, it’s a great way to spend an afternoon with your pup in Charleston. The dog park is completely fenced in and offers a hose/cleaning station, fenced in small dog play area, trash cans and waste bags. There are always plenty of friendly people and dogs at the park too. Be sure to bring towels and a seat cover or blanket for your filthy friend after play day is over. Cost is $1 per human, free for furry kids.

Gaumer said the park he visited had a party atmosphere “Dogs would come and play while the owners socialized.” Gaumer said it might be something the town should look into, as Cohasset has plenty of land. And plenty of dogs (approximately 800 licensed dogs.

Veteran dog owner and walker Selectman Karen Quigley said there are very few dogs that don’t get along with other dogs, usually the problem is a hysterical owner.” Quigley added that said the real benefit of walking a dog is walking the dog, not standing around talking.

Town Manager Chris Senior said he had visited a Charleston dog park a couple of years ago “They had very big social activities, yappie hours, and sponsorships from pet companies. We tried to do one in New York.”
